VW Key Battery Replacement Guide

Changing a VW key fob battery is a DIY job you can do in minutes: identify your fob type, open the case without forcing it, swap the coin cell for the same type, and snap it shut. If the fob still does not work after a battery change, call or WhatsApp 07367 634032 and we will sort it.

A dying key fob battery announces itself gradually: you have to stand closer to the car, press the button twice, and eventually nothing happens at all. The good news is that swapping the battery is one of the few VW key jobs you can genuinely do yourself — no specialist tools, no programming, just a steady hand.

This guide walks you through it step by step for the common Volkswagen fob types. And if a fresh battery does not bring your fob back to life, we will tell you exactly what that means and what to do next.

Step 1: Identify your VW fob type

Most Volkswagen keys fall into two families. The flip key has a metal blade that folds out of the fob — common on Golf, Polo and Passat models over the years. The proximity smart key is a chunkier fob with no visible blade, used for keyless entry and push-button start on newer models like recent Tiguans.

Both types run on a coin cell, and both open in a similar way. Knowing which you have helps you buy the right battery before you start — though the surest check is always the old cell itself, as described below.

Step 2: Open the fob without damaging it

For a flip key, press the release button and swing the blade out. You will see a seam or a small slot along the edge of the case. Slide a coin — a 2p piece works well — or a plastic pry tool into the slot and twist gently. The two halves separate with light pressure.

For a proximity fob, look for the seam around the edge or a small release catch. Use the same gentle twist with a coin or plastic tool. Never use a knife or screwdriver blade: metal tools slip, scratch the case and can crack the circuit board inside. If the case will not open with gentle pressure, stop — forcing it breaks the clips that hold it together.

Step 3: Fit the correct replacement cell

Note which way the old battery sits — positive side up or down — and which type it is. Most VW fobs use a CR2032 coin cell, but check the marking on your old battery rather than assuming. Buy a fresh, branded cell; cheap multipacks that have sat in a drawer for years often arrive half-dead.

Lift the old cell out with a fingernail, drop the new one in the same orientation, and make sure it sits flat in its holder. Avoid touching both faces of the new battery more than necessary — skin oils can shorten its life.

Step 4: Close it up and test

Press the two halves back together until they click all the way round — run a fingernail along the seam to check it is fully closed. On a flip key, fold the blade back in and out once to make sure the mechanism still moves freely.

Now test every button at the car: lock, unlock and boot release. Stand at a normal distance — if you still have to press twice or stand close, something else is wrong. Some fobs need a re-sync after a battery change: try pressing the unlock button while standing next to the car, or check your handbook for the re-sync procedure for your model.

If it still does not work after a battery change, call us

A fresh, correctly fitted battery that changes nothing points to a deeper fault: a worn button contact, a cracked circuit board, water damage, or a fob that has lost its sync with the car. None of those are DIY fixes.

This is exactly the point to call a specialist. Ring or WhatsApp 07367 634032 and tell us what you tried — we will test the fob at your location, re-sync it if possible, or supply and program a replacement fob if the old one has genuinely failed. We are open 24 hours, and we will tell you honestly which outcome applies before quoting.

Frequently asked questions

What battery does a VW key fob take?

Most VW fobs use a CR2032 coin cell, but always check the marking on your old battery before buying. The type is printed on the cell itself.

Will I need to reprogram my VW key after changing the battery?

No — changing the battery does not erase the programming. If the fob does not work after a battery change, the fault is elsewhere: a damaged fob or a sync problem, not lost programming.

How do I open a VW key fob without breaking it?

Use a coin or plastic pry tool in the seam or slot, and twist gently. Never use a knife or screwdriver, and never force it — if it will not open with light pressure, stop before you break the clips.

I fitted a new battery and the fob is still dead — what now?

Call or WhatsApp 07367 634032. A fresh battery that changes nothing means a fob fault or sync problem. We will test it at your location and either re-sync it or supply and program a replacement.
